TrussCharts vs Looker Studio: When Custom Beats DIY
Looker Studio is free. TrussCharts is paid. Here is the honest comparison, and when each one is the right call.
If you can get what you need out of Looker Studio, use Looker Studio. We mean it. Looker Studio is free, it connects to a lot of things, and for simple reports it is hard to beat on cost. This article is for the moment when Looker Studio has stopped scaling for you, and you are trying to figure out whether a custom dashboard is worth it.
What Looker Studio does well
- Zero cost for the tool itself
- Clean integration with Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Sheets, and BigQuery
- Good enough for marketing teams that mostly live in the Google ecosystem
- Easy to copy a template and get a basic dashboard in an hour
- Great for one-off reports
Where Looker Studio starts to break
1. Joining data from systems Google does not own
The moment you want to join Google Ads to Salesforce, or CallTrackingMetrics to Zoho, or Kipu to ModMed, you need middleware. Supermetrics, Funnel, Fivetran, your own BigQuery pipeline. Suddenly Looker Studio is not free. It is free plus a hundred to several hundred dollars a month in connectors.
2. Writing data back into source systems
Looker Studio is read-only. It cannot tag a call in CTM when it is missed. It cannot create a Salesforce task when a lead goes stale. It cannot sync an updated field back to Kipu. If you need the dashboard to be more than a report, you need something else.
3. Operational pages that are not reports
A missed-call queue with a "mark as called back" button. A live queue widget for a TV. An agent self-view. These are not Looker Studio report pages. These are custom UI.
4. Role-based access across multiple business units
Looker Studio's sharing model is per-report. If you run sixteen clinics and each manager should see only their clinic, you are copying reports and duplicating configuration. It gets ugly fast.
5. Mobile and TV layouts
Looker Studio is fine on desktop and acceptable on tablet. It is not good on a mobile phone and it was never designed for a wall-mounted TV at 1920x1080.
Where TrussCharts fits
TrussCharts is right for you if any of the following are true:
- You need to join data from systems that Google does not natively connect — CallTrackingMetrics, Salesforce, Zoho, Kipu, ModMed, CallRail, EMRs, custom databases.
- You need the dashboard to write back into source systems, not just read.
- You need operational pages that look and feel like a product, not a report.
- You run multi-location, multi-brand, or multi-team operations and need role-based views without duplicating work.
- You want it on a TV in the call center, on a phone during a shift, and on a desktop in the C-suite — all with the same backing data.
Where Looker Studio still wins
- You are a Google-shop marketing team doing weekly reports to one audience.
- Your budget for dashboards is zero and you have an in-house analyst who likes Looker Studio.
- The data you care about already lives in Google Ads, GA4, Google Sheets, or BigQuery.
- You do not need to write back to anything.
